now THAT was pretty cool
i think this is the first time i've been in a car going through the migration. i've seen a bunch of them at one time, but this is the most i've ever seen. what's cool about them is they roost on my father-in-law's farm along the periphery, hanging out in the eucalyptus tress.

I had the pleasure of being in Big Sur in 1992 for 2 weeks of monarch migration. It wasn't possible to walk on the grass without stepping on more than a few of them. The sheer volume of butterflies on the trees was staggering. And if I'm not mistaken, they breed while en route. Which is to say, Big Sur was one big massive freakfest of colorful copulation. Or is that redundant?
here's a link to an article in last nights local paper about the wee beasties.
