Visiting snopes can be eye opening

i've long been called a fascist pig by those that believe it is my duty to support them with no say in how my financial contributions are used. a lady in my world history class in college years ago was furious that i told her she was the one to blame for her f**ked up life by having kids when she was 16, among other reasons.

so all of the flailing of the president since katrina has just been sand under the saddle to me. a constant itch and irritation. while visiting snopes checking out a different article, i came across this one by a Canadian. i don't subscribe to the "if it's in a foreign paper it's true" school of thought. i do subscribe to "that makes a lot of sense, so i'll blog it" school.

a snippet of the article linked above
From Democrats and the American Left -- the U.S. equivalent to the people who run Canada -- we are still hearing that the disaster in New Orleans showed a heartless, white Republican America had abandoned its underclass.

This is garbage. The great majority of those not evacuated lived in assisted housing, receive food stamps and prescription medicine and government support through many other programmes. Many have, all their lives, expected someone to lift them to safety, sans input from themselves. And the demagogic mayor they elected left, quite literally, hundreds of transit and school buses parked in rows to be lost in the flood, that could have driven them out of town.

Yes, that was insensitive. But it is also the truth; and sooner or later we must acknowledge that welfare dependency creates exactly the sort of haplessness and social degeneration we saw on display, as the floodwaters rose. Many suffered terribly, and many died, and one's heart goes out. But already the survivors are being put up in new accommodations, and their various entitlements have been directed to new locations.

linked off of the snopes page is another here by a black pastor who apparently is a talk radio host as well. can't say i've ever heard or heard of him, but damn, does he pull off the gloves. he's giving us the same story ken hamblin the "black avenger" has been talking about and writing about for years. a snippet from the link:
Enter Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan. Jackson and Farrakhan laid blame on "racist" President Bush. Farrakhan actually proposed the idea that the government blew up a levee so as to kill blacks and save whites. The two demanded massive governmental spending to rebuild New Orleans, above and beyond the federal government's proposed $60 billion. Not only that, these two were positioning themselves as the gatekeepers to supervise the dispersion of funds. Perfect: Two of the most dishonest elite blacks in America, "overseeing" billions of dollars. I wonder where that money will end up.

it is still news. i still hear about how the government left these poor people to fend for themselves, that there was inadequate preps made, that the bush whitehouse is to blame for all of the problems noted in the whole friggin world, etc etc etc.

enough. katrina devastated an area larger than the entire country of england. just WTF do people think the capabilities of our government are?

i suppose that next i'll be called a fascist, racist pig. so far off the mark that it isn't even on the paper, but that's ok. those that refuse to see the truth, and blame the messenger, those are the ones that should shoulder the blame for the attitudes and dependencies found throughout our country. they are the source of the problem. i'm just reporting it.

Bo,

Thanks to the alternative media, the word is getting out about what really happened there. I lived in NO for 9 months while my ship was being built in 1990 and the conditions there were the same then. My hope is that many of those people will use this tragedy to get off the government tit and make something of their lives on their own.
