hard to believe it's been 10 years

One of my favorite jobs on the face of the earth was being a Nuclear Shift Test Engineer (STE) and Chief Test Engineer at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. for 15 years after i got out the the navy, Mare Island kept me employed and challenged.
10 years ago today, Mare Island closed, a victim of the BRAC and overall downsizing of our military and it's assets.

Some of the best friends I have ever made and the best time of my life (other than getting married and having my children) were spent at Mare Island.

Total Shame... Not to mention all the other bases in Northern California that closed (Mather AFB, McClellan AFB, Sac Army Depot, Treasure Island, Presidion of SF, I could go on...).

Good site, BTW. Keep up the good work.

You been back there in a while, Bo? I just drove around it last weekend. Lot of changes happening there. They left the old church alone because it's a landmark but that row of gorgeous houses along the officers' quarters is all pulled up now to make room for the new houseing developements.

Damn shame. That place is real history. Even to walk around some of the old shops there bring about ghosts of the past that you just can't deny.
